Today was G’s first day of school. We were up at the crack of dawn making breakfast and packing lunch, getting him outfitted and his siblings dressed and ready. He seemed excited, yet rather subdued and unsure of what to expect. I dropped the younger kids at the neighbors because we all know that if they had come with it would have been one big class clown audition.
On the way there I tried to reassure him that it was going to be fun and he would make lots of friends. I told him to listen to his teacher and ask her if he needed anything. He didn’t say much, but I could tell his wheels were turning.
We got to the school and hubby and I walked him into his class. I was trying very hard not to be one of THOSE parents – you know, the ones who just can’t leave and hover for 28 minutes while the teacher is trying to get things underway. We helped him unload his WELL MARKED supplies and find his seat. I took a few pictures, spoke briefly to the teacher and then gave him a kiss and a hug goodbye.
The whole way home all I could think about was that it was only 3 days and he would be home at 12:30. No big deal, right? Just the beginning of the rest of his life…
Poor hubby. He called me 3 or 4 times worried to death, which was nice in a way because then I didn’t have to do it. I kept reassuring him that he would be fine and things would go well.
I picked him up, right on time and I think that he liked it. Obviously, the highlights of the day included what he had for lunch and a story the teacher had read that featured burping animals (?). He also claimed that recess was boring, but I gave him suggestions for games he could organize the next time. Overall, I think that the first day was a success. Tomorrow will be interesting as we complete our first homeschool day. Wish me luck.
And so, I start on a new path as the mom of a school aged child. A different world to be sure, but an exciting one. Tonight he was busy trying to spell words with our magnetic letters and was doing a bang up job!
He looks older already…

I got a little misty reading this! He looks so grown up in his uniform. You should be very proud! Welcome to the ranks of moms w/ school-aged kids. You can do it – no sweat! I’ll be praying for your first day home. Relax and take it slow. It’s easy to burn everyone out with our beginning of the year enthusiasm! Trust me – I know this one from experience!!
Love ya!

I echo Jen’s words too. He does look so grown up already. Man, what a blast from the past – you just took me back 7 years ago…

Oh, he looks so adorable in his uniform! I am glad all went well, and you all survived his 1st day.
And don’t worry, my youngest has been at school half the school year, and I barely get any info out of him, other than “I played football” “we did fitness” “stuff” or “I dunno!”

Well he’s just adorable! He looks like a CPA or a politician! And I mean that in a good way.
